Sculptures

TO BE REVISED Although he began constructing only in the late 1940s, Kurzen considered himself principally a sculptor. The "Mythics," playful imaginary beings of cut cardboard, and his anthropomorphic works made of industrial yet domestic artifacts, are characterized by cutting, folding, and fitting, perhaps influenced by his father, a tailor. Kurzen artistic grammar – playful, sarcastic, poetic – is likewise embodied in his pioneering work in holography. As he told The New York Times in 1985, "Holograms show things are not what they seem." His work “Primal Manifestation” (1977) is held in the MIT Museum’s Holography Collection.
